Black Pine Garden

The small triangular garden is in the Allee between the Mother’s Garden and the Ward Garden. Developed in 1989 by Kunitoshi Akabane of Tassaraja Nursery and the Diablo Bonsai Club, this garden is an example of the traditional style of Japanese Gardening, or bonsai. The Pinus thunbergiana or Black Pine was 40 years old when planted in 1989. Normally this tree would reach 100 feet, but by pruning using bonsai techniques when it was young, this tree will stay small.
